Filming your video on iPhone
Here is everything you need, start to finish. The first setup takes a couple of minutes, and after that you can just pick up your phone and record.
Set it up once
Open the Settings app on your iPhone and scroll down to Camera. You only have to do this once, then you can forget about it.
- Set Record Video to 4K at 30 fps so the picture looks as sharp as it possibly can.
- Set Formats to Most Compatible so the file opens properly on our side when you send it over.
- Turn Grid ON, which puts faint lines on your screen that make it easy to line yourself up.
Set up the shot
Use the back camera, hold the phone sideways, keep it steady at eye level, and make sure the light is on your face.
- Open the Camera app, swipe across to Video, and film with the back camera on the normal 1x lens. The selfie camera looks a lot worse, so avoid it even though it means you cannot see yourself.
- Turn the phone sideways so the video comes out wide like a TV, which is the shape YouTube needs.
- Rest it on a tripod, or even a stack of books, at eye level and about an arm's length away, because holding it in your hand will look shaky.
- Sit facing a window or a lamp so the light falls on your face, and make sure the window is never behind you. A quiet room helps a lot too.
Frame yourself and lock it
Get your head and shoulders nicely in frame, then lock the focus so the picture stays sharp the whole time.
- Frame yourself from the head and shoulders up, leaving a small gap above your head with your eyes around the upper grid line.
- Press and hold on your face on the screen for a couple of seconds, until a yellow AE/AF LOCK banner pops up.
- Switch on Do Not Disturb so a call or a notification cannot interrupt you halfway through.
You can now record
Press the red button, look right at the lens, and just talk through your script. There is one last step below for when you have finished.
When you're done, send it here
It is just one link, with no account and nothing to set up. You tap it, add your video, and upload.
- Send it to us exactly as it came out of the camera, with no trimming or editing, since we take care of all of that for you.
- Hang on to the video on your phone until we confirm we have it safely.
